  4. Cover the Drain: Place a drain plug or cloth over the drain to keep the reaction concentrated.
  5. Wait: Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Flush with Hot Water.

Laundry softener

Citric acid can be used as a fabric softener substitute because it helps neutralize alkaline detergent residues and can reduce stiffness caused by hard water minerals.

Method 1: Citric Acid Fabric Softener Solution

  1. Dissolve 25–50 g of citric acid powder in 250ml liter of warm water.
  2. Store the solution in a labeled bottle.
  3. Add 30–60 mL (2–4 tablespoons) to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine for a normal load.

Method 2: Direct Use

  1. Add 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 g) of citric acid powder directly to the fabric softener compartment during the rinse cycle.

Do not put dry citric acid directly onto clothes.

Benefits:

  • Softens fabrics without coating fibers.
  • Helps remove detergent residue.
  • Reduces mineral buildup in hard-water areas.
  • Usually leaves towels more absorbent than conventional fabric softeners.

Important Precautions:

  • Do not mix citric acid with chlorine bleach.
  • Avoid excessive concentrations, as highly acidic solutions may contribute to corrosion of some washing machine components over long periods.
  • If your washing machine manufacturer advises against acidic rinse additives, follow the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Test on delicate or specialty fabrics if you're concerned about colorfastness.

For most households, a 10–20% citric acid solution used in the softener compartment is a practical and widely used approach.
