Old fashioned

  • 2 ounces high proof bourbon/rye (Bulleit, Buffalo Trace) or brandy/mezcal
  • 1/4 ounce simple or rich demerara syrup, or maple sirup
  • 2 to 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  1. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass.
  2. Add ice.
  3. Stir until well chilled (20-30 seconds).
  4. Strain into serving glass.
  5. Express lemon or orange peel oils over the top (twist the peel and rub it on the edge of the glass), and drop it in.

Old fashioned jar

Serves 8 cocktails:

  • 16 ounces bourbon
  • 8 ounces water
  • 11/4 ounces Simple Syrup (this page)
  • 1/2 teaspoon old-fashioned aromatic bitters
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange bitters
  • Strips of orange peel for garnishing
  • Cocktail cherries for garnishing
  1. Combine bourbon, water, simple syrup, aromatic bitters, and orange bitters in 1-liter glass bottle.
  2. Cover and freeze until well chilled, about 2 hours.
  3. Prepare cocktails immediately or transfer to refrigerator and store for up to 1 month; return to freezer and chill for 30 minutes before preparing cocktails.
  4. Gently shake bottle to recombine, then serve cocktails in chilled rocks glasses half-filled with ice or containing 1 large ice cube.
  5. Pinch orange peels over individual drinks and rub outer edges of glasses with peels.
  6. Garnish with orange peels and cocktail cherries.
