Old fashioned
- 2 ounces high proof bourbon/rye (Bulleit, Buffalo Trace) or brandy/mezcal
- 1/4 ounce simple or rich demerara syrup, or maple sirup
- 2 to 4 dashes Angostura bitters
- Add all ingredients to a mixing glass.
- Add ice.
- Stir until well chilled (20-30 seconds).
- Strain into serving glass.
- Express lemon or orange peel oils over the top (twist the peel and rub it on the edge of the glass), and drop it in.
Old fashioned jar
Serves 8 cocktails:
- 16 ounces bourbon
- 8 ounces water
- 11/4 ounces Simple Syrup (this page)
- 1/2 teaspoon old-fashioned aromatic bitters
- 1/2 teaspoon orange bitters
- Strips of orange peel for garnishing
- Cocktail cherries for garnishing
- Combine bourbon, water, simple syrup, aromatic bitters, and orange bitters in 1-liter glass bottle.
- Cover and freeze until well chilled, about 2 hours.
- Prepare cocktails immediately or transfer to refrigerator and store for up to 1 month; return to freezer and chill for 30 minutes before preparing cocktails.
- Gently shake bottle to recombine, then serve cocktails in chilled rocks glasses half-filled with ice or containing 1 large ice cube.
- Pinch orange peels over individual drinks and rub outer edges of glasses with peels.
- Garnish with orange peels and cocktail cherries.
